A cocktail created by the powers of artificial intelligence has been given a firm thumbs down, The Daily Mail reports. The drink, called Grandma’s Revenge, was invented after a challenge by a TikTok user named Mob, who has 1.2 million followers on the popular social media platform.
The publication reports that the novel cocktail is made from brandy, sherry, port, lime juice, lavender syrup, dashes of angostura bitters, butterscotch liqueur and a lavender sprig as the garnish.
The AI instructions state: “Add the brandy, sherry, and port to a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for 20 seconds until well-chilled. Add the lime juice, lavender syrup and angostura bitters and stir to combine. Float the butterscotch liqueur on top. Garnish with a lavender sprig and serve.”
However, this questionable confection did not go down well with the TikTok taster, who gave it just three out 10, and described it as tasting like “the melted candy that you find at the bottom of your Grandma’s handbag.”
This hopefully goes to prove that there is no substitute for human knowledge and creativity when it comes to mixing the perfect cocktail. After all, it’s an art that has developed over thousands of years, from the Greeks who added honey to their wine, to the wassailing traditions of western England, when cider was mixed with herbs and spices.
Pioneers such as Jerry Thomas, a celebrated American bartender, took cocktail mixing to a whole new level with his flamboyant style and adventurous approach to preparing drinks. His famous book, How to Mix Drinks or The Bon-Vivant’s Companion, is still widely read today.
All this goes to show that when it comes to making a fabulous cocktail, there is no substitute for human invention and tradition.
