It’s the start of Lent, and for some people this means a period of fasting or giving up favourite treats. It’s a traditional religious festival that starts on Ash Wednesday (February 14) and lasts for six weeks until Maundy Thursday, just before the beginning of Easter. Many people observe Lent by carrying out charitable acts, or abstaining from certain food or drink.

Some people take a more moderate approach to the 40-day Lent period by using the time to make healthier lifestyle choices. If you are taking this route and wondering how to combine it with a cocktail making course, then look no further!

‘Mindful mixology’ is a way of creating cocktails that are delicious and also contribute to a balanced diet and lifestyle. For example, they may have a lower alcohol content than regular cocktails, or make greater use of natural and nutrient-rich ingredients. Here are some suggestions for mindful cocktails that are sophisticated and full of flavour.

Low sugar cocktails

A lot of cocktails have a very high sugar content. Spirits such as gins, rums, and cognacs are particularly high in sugar, while mixers such as fruit juice, aromatic bitters, and agave syrup contain natural sugars.

Furthermore, liqueurs such as triple sec are high in sugar. All these ingredients add up to a cocktail with a lot of empty calories; bad news if you are watching your weight or managing a condition such as diabetes. Here are some low-sugar cocktails with simple swaps that are both refreshing and low in calories.

Low-sugar daiquiri

For a low-sugar daiquiri, mix 50ml of light white rum with equal parts freshly squeezed lime juice, sugar-free sweetener syrup, and chilled water. Shake all the ingredients together with ice, and strain into a coupe glass. Serve with a lime wedge for a refreshing and guilt-free beverage.

No-sugar espresso martini

The espresso martini is a fashionable drink and the perfect pick-me-up after a long day. However, it’s unfortunately high in sugar and calories.

For a lighter version, mix equal parts vodka and freshly brewed espresso coffee with sugar-free sweetener syrup and a pinch of salt. Add all the ingredients to a shaker with ice, and shake vigorously before straining the contents into a chilled martini glass.

Low and no-alcohol cocktails

If you are cutting back on alcohol, then you can still enjoy the sophistication of a well-mixed drink with a pleasing balance of flavours and textures. There are many low or no-alcohol cocktails available. Here are just a couple of suggestions.

Mojito mocktail

Muddle one teaspoon of sugar with a bunch of mint leaves. You can use a pestle and mortar or even the end of a wooden spoon or rolling pin and a chopping board. Next, pour the juice of two limes into a tall glass with some crushed ice. Add the muddled mint and top it up with soda water.

Aperol spritz

The aperol spritz is a popular pre-dinner drink thanks to its low-alcohol content that won’t make you heady on an empty stomach. It has an easy-going bittersweet flavour, and can be paired with equal parts sparkling water for a light and refreshing alternative to stronger cocktails.
