Interest in mixed drinks has enjoyed a revival in recent years, whether on nights out on the town, mixing your own creations at home, or taking it to the next level with an online cocktail making class. Here’s a look ahead at some of the predicted trends for 2023.

Retro cocktails

The kitsch revival continues with a trend towards fun retro cocktails, served complete with a pink paper umbrella, a slice of orange, and a cherry! Who doesn’t secretly enjoy sipping a well-dressed drink from a chilled glass? It’s light-hearted, sunny, and familiar: just the tonic after a long hard day at work!

Favourites include the piña colada, which is made from a blend of coconut cream, white rum, and pineapple juice. For a non-alcoholic version, you can substitute the rum for apple juice and a dash of almond extract.

The tequila sunrise also has that cheerful unpretentious Californian vibe that can remind us of that perfect summer way back when. It’s made with blanco tequila, orange juice, triple sec, grenadine, and a cherry to garnish. Mix in an ice-filled highball glass and enjoy the taste of sunshine!

Alcohol-free drinking

The mocktail (a non-alcoholic cocktail) is now a standard feature of most bars, rather than an afterthought. Skilled bartenders put just as much effort into creating a good mocktail these days, and they can be just as complex and satisfying as a traditional cocktail.

The next level of the mocktail contains purpose-made non-alcoholic spirits or brewed drinks. These contain plant-based ingredients that are selected to provide a mild buzz, or to capture that nice relaxed feeling after a few sips of the real thing.

This is the perfect solution for those who enjoy unwinding with a drink after a long day, but want to watch their booze consumption.

Savoury drinks

Some of us love the sweet and fruity taste of cocktails, while others have a more savoury palate. If you fall into the latter camp, then 2023 could be your year, as more bars are offering more choice of savoury or spicy cocktails. You may already have the martini as your go-to drink of choice if you are not possessed of a sweet tooth.

Now bartenders are getting bold and experimenting with more versions of the Dirty Martini, which is brinier and has the olive juice mixed in. Another trend predicted to go large this year is the spicy cocktail, such as a dash of jalapeño or chilli sauce added to a margarita.

Tequila & Rum cocktails

The past year has seen a wider range of high-end tequilas and rums enter the market, that have tempted many cocktail lovers away from their usual tipple of whisky or gin. In fact, according to the Metro, rum sales in the UK overtook whisky for the first time.

Classic rum cocktails to try include the daiquiri, which can be made easily from rum, lime juice, and simple syrup. The mojito is perfect for summer, and easy to make up by the jugful for social gatherings.
